Flat or Semi-Gloss?: All About Paint Sheens

Paint Sheens
Flat, Eggshell, Semi-Gloss, OH MY! When it comes to painting a room, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing the right paint sheen. Here at Davis Painting, we teach our clients all about paint sheens every day! Paint sheen refers to the level of gloss or shine in a paint finish. Different sheens offer various benefits and have unique characteristics. In this blog post, we’ll explore the most common types of paint sheens and help you understand which is best for your project.

Flat

Flat paint has the least amount of sheen, offering a non-reflective and velvety finish. It’s ideal for hiding imperfections on walls and ceilings, making it a popular choice for older homes with uneven surfaces. Davis Painting recommends Sherwin Williams’ Super Paint for a flat finish. We use this in two-story areas because, with the angular sheen, the end result is a dead flat with a consistent finish. This sheen is also perfect for creating a cozy and muted ambiance in bedrooms, living rooms, and dining rooms. However, it is less washable and may not be the best choice for high-traffic areas.

Eggshell

Eggshell paint is named for its subtle, soft shine, which resembles the surface of an eggshell. It balances the flat and satin sheens, making it suitable for many interior spaces. At Davis Painting, we use the Sherwin Williams Cashmere eggshell paint to ensure the most flawless finish. It’s more washable than flat paint, which makes it an excellent choice for bedrooms, hallways, and family rooms as it is easy to clean.

Satin

Satin paint offers a gentle luster, making it a versatile choice for various applications. It provides a bit more durability than eggshell and is easier to clean, making it suitable for very high-traffic areas in commercial spaces. Its subtle sheen adds a touch of sophistication without being too shiny. We recommend Sherwin Williams’ Duration Home satin paint.

Semi-Gloss

Semi-gloss paint has a noticeable shine and is highly durable and easy to clean. It’s often used on trim, moldings, doors, and cabinets. Its reflective properties make it resistant to moisture and stains, which is why it’s the go-to choice for areas prone to splashes and spills, like kitchens and bathrooms.
